Sondheim's 'concept musical' to play in Ohio

by Dawn Leach

Cleveland-In 1970, gay composer Stephen Sondheim introduced the "concept musical" to the theatre world with Company. Rather than a traditional plot, songs tie together the ideas that drive the action.

Company centers on Bobby, a 35-yearold man struggling with loneliness. In a series of vignettes involving five married couples that are Bobby's friends, he begins to question his relationships. He realizes that he has used his friendships as a barrier against true intimacy with a significant other of his own, and realizes that he needs intimacy to relieve his loneliness.

Edward Payson Call, who is directing the show at the Cleveland Play House September 29 through November 1, attended

the original New York production of Company.

"I never saw anything like it before," Call said. "I left the theatre exhilarated. It hooked me emotionally from the start."

In the Cleveland Play House production, the show has been taken back to its original 1970 setting, unlike other recent revivals that have updated the show for the 1990s.

Company will be at the Cleveland Play House Bolton Theatre September 29 through November 1. For ticket information, call 216-795-7000. There will be a special performance for new members of the Cleveland Lesbian Gay Center on October 29. The performance is followed by a reception with cast members. For information about this event, call the center at 216522-1999.
